PENSIONED OFF (September 5, 2008)
Watching the off-season tourists who still crowd Motovun, one is struck by their considerable age. Coming almost entirely from Europe, and mostly from the neighboring countries of the European Union, the bulk of them are edging toward seventy. Pensioned off, they are free to roam, but not too far from home. Travel costs even at a heavy discount. Besides, and should not venture too far from one’s most trusted doctor. Watching all these people waddle, limp, stagger, and drag their feet, I cannot shake off a feeling that I have the whole of Europe in front of my eyes. An entire sub-continent pensioned off for good.
