NICK SEROTA: A LETTER TO THE JACKDAW (May 27, 2008)

I am kind of fond of Tate Modern’s trailing the blaze of contemporary art at its very worst, but I am otherwise with you concerning Nick Serota (“Should Serota Serve Another Seven Years?” No. 79, June 2008). Three terms of seven years at the helm of the art’s pits is surely long enough. “Serota’s time is up,” as you rightly say. Let another trailblazer try his or her luck at this pitiful game. But we differ as to the prospects ahead. “A less decadent and superficial era is beginning,” or so you state in the last paragraph of your editorial. Really? We are still at the very tip of the pits, I assure you. And we may yet wish old Nick back, if for no other reason, then for his ability to spread the worst around the world at a clip. For his nose is insuperable. As are his many connections. Mark my words, we may still pray for his skill in the awful years to come.
