MUCH (December 18, 2008)

Early this afternoon I met with a fellow some twenty years my junior who plays an important rôle in the Croatian green movement. We did not talk much about “business,” though.  Instead, we talked about lofty subjects such as the future of the human species. Our expectations of things to come were far from cheerful, but we laughed a lot nonetheless. This is the spirit that is still with me an hour or so after we said goodbye to each other. Although there is little we can do to change Croatia, Europe, or the world, there is much we can do to change our own lives. When put into words, this sounds quite trite, if not even corny, but it strikes me as a revelation of sorts at this particular moment in time. God only knows how my new friend will remember our talk, if he will remember it at all, but I am sure to keep returning to it every now and then. Indeed, there is much we can do to change our own lives. Much.
