KNOW THY ENEMY (December 11, 2008)
While in Zagreb, I am meeting with all sorts of people. Some of them are quite close to power. Croatia is a tiny country, and it is thus not surprising that many of the things I am learning on the sly are kind of personal. Everyone who is anyone here knows many powerful people from their college days, if not even earlier. My interlocutors often remember many an embarrassing thing about the movers and shakers of the land. In short, it is hardly a revelation that I am learning all kinds of things about my nemesis, the Istrian golf lobby, whose toes I have stepped on a few times too many, as witnessed by the slander case I am now facing. Know thy enemy is my motto, which is why I rarely show any real interest in such stories, especially if they are too personal for comfort. As far as gossip is concerned, Zagreb is surely the place to be.
