INSECTICIDE (May 9, 2008)

Staring absentmindedly around my dining-room table, ready to call it a day, I focus on a spray-can of insecticide. On its side, a bunch of insects are shown in stark silhouette: a mosquito, a fly, a wasp, a flee, an ant… The pictures strike me as quite realistic, but then I notice that the insects on display have too many legs. All of them. To be sure of my impression, I pick up the can and start counting the legs. All of a sudden, I am quite meticulous. As it turns out, all of them have six legs exactly, as they should have. I end up consoling myself that real insects appear to have more legs than they actually do have. The misperception is in their very repugnant nature, I pat myself on the back. And spray-cans of insecticide should show a few legs too many, anyway. After all, insecticide is insecticide. Nothing but consolation.
