IN PRAISE OF HUNDERTWASSER (July 27, 2008)

Years ago I saw a painting by Friedensreich Hundertwasser in which he offered his humble solution to the traffic problem in Vienna. If my memory is serving me well, it was a single-lane spiral highway that led all the traffic inwards, until all the motorcycles, cars, vans, trucks, and buses came to a final stop in the center. A day before the Motovun film festival, I am struck by a feeling that Hundertwasser’s solution pertains to much more than traffic in cities and towns. It pertains to our entire culture. More, it pertains to our civilization as a whole. The inward spiral is the sign of our times.
