GREAT SALESMEN (July 30, 2008)

I marvel at Ivan Jakovčić, the governor of Istria, and Slobodan Vugrinec, the mayor of Motovun. They are not only selling wholesale development of the town’s wondrous surroundings under the guise of golf and polo, but they are also selling the most primitive merry-making within the walls of the medieval town under the guise of film and culture. Both of them are quite visible at Motovun film festival, which is dedicated almost entirely to kebab, beer, and loud music at its basest. Great salesmen, Jakovčić and Vugrinec, I must admit. Under their able guidance, the town will reach new heights of, well, depravity. At this day and age, it is only the heights that count. Depravity is an outdated notion, anyway.
