GOOGLING FOR ANTICHRIST (November 4, 2008)

I have been checking the American elections on online newspapers quite regularly the last few weeks. The last few days I have been checking the elections every few hours. At the moment, I am glued to the computer screen. It is not that I am so enthusiastic to see Barack Obama win the elections, for the job awaiting him would be horrendous, but that I am scared shitless that some nut will assassinate him before the event. And I am sure that America is teeming with nuts of this sort. Christian fundamentalism has provided the moral support the eager nuts would need for the deed. Googling for Antichrist on the Election Day, you will find the name of the favorite presidential candidate all over the place. Judging from the World Wide Web search results, millions of Americans are googling for Antichrist at this very moment.

Addendum (May 3, 2009)

Google Trends confirms my claim about millions googling for Antichrist just ahead of the American elections last October and November. The chart associated with this word shows a sharp spike at that time. Luckily, it is a single spike. The panic came and went with the elections. But it is a good word to search for every now and then. Christian fundamentalism is a force to be reckoned with, and especially in the United States. God bless Google Trends, though.
