GOOD FOR FOOLS (December 5, 2008)

As I was struggling with my umbrella on my way out of the post office this morning, I started thinking about the inclement weather. “It’s good for…,” I began, but could not finish the thought. “No,” I corrected myself at once, “it is not good for ducks.” Although it was raining quite hard, it would be too cold and windy for them. My umbrella was shaking in my hand all the while. As I was picking my way down the slippery archway between the upper and lower squares, I kept thinking of an animal that would appreciate this weather, but I could not come up with a single one. Polar bears came to me in a flash, too, but I dismissed the idea a second later. “It’s good for fools like you,” I happily concluded in the end, “who just have to get out on a morning like this so as to check the mail and have their morning coffee!”
