CLOCKWISE (May 12, 2008)
Planted in mid-winter, the creeper on the northern wall of my terrace is doing pretty well this spring. It is growing at a clip along the vertical poles of the metal fence installed last spring. In fact, there is a fierce race to the top across the entire fence. Although I led some of the shoots to the poles, others found their way without any guidance. But there is one curious thing that I noticed earlier today: all the shoots are spiraling upwards in the clockwise direction. I did expect that the creeper would be partial to one of the two directions, but I am still surprised that there is no variation whatsoever in this regard. One question that remains in this connection is whether the same creeper would choose the opposite direction in the southern hemisphere. Chances are I will never know the answer, though.
