ANOTHER MOTOVUN SURVIVOR (December 16, 2008)
Early this afternoon I bumped into Jasmina Jurković in the very center of Zagreb. We had a nice talk over a drink at Bulldog Pub. Another Motovun survivor, she recently moved to a picturesque hilltown close to Parma together with her Dutch partner, Ronald Geul. Predictably enough, we commiserated for a long time. “Paranoia still lingers,” she laughed, “but it is ebbing away quickly enough.” She remembered my first encounter with the Motovun mayor, and proceeded to tell me about their first encounter with the mayor of their new town. “He welcomed us most warmly,” she laughed again, “and then he said that he hoped we would stay.” She enthused about the people, the culture, and the food. “Ah,” she concluded, “you must come and see the whole thing for yourself!” Nodding all the while, I enjoyed her prodding. In four or five years, my house may well sell for enough money to make me join the lucky ranks of Motovun survivors.
