A NOISE-FREE ENVIRONMENT (November 21, 2008)

Even in a noise-free environment, such as an anechoic chamber, two sounds can always be heard: the low-pitched sound of blood in circulation and the high-pitched sound of the nervous system in operation (“Mysteries of the Organism,” July 6, 1982). After nearly a year of regular yoga practice, I can hear both sounds not only while meditating, but all the time. No matter how loud the environment, the sounds are always there. One way or another, I now live in a noise-free environment all my own.
