A BIT TOO EASY (July 31, 2008)
Capitalism has become a bit too easy. A bit too smooth. And tiresomely so, I would venture from the sidelines. Imagine a new movement bent on curbing it without making it obsolete, for there is no known alternative to it yet. A new movement making the life of capitalists and their stooges, the slimy politicians, a bit dearer. A bit more iffy. And a bit more exciting, as well. Imagine assassinations of the most prominent representatives of the new world order on a daily basis. Now one, now another. Morning and evening news alike. Name after name. Company after company, and constituency after constituency. And for no material reason whatsoever. Just like that. Out of sheer idealism redolent of 1968. A pleasing idea, I must say, and one that must have crossed many more minds than mine. Today. At this very minute, perhaps. At best, I am the first one to jot it down. The first one to give it some shape, no matter how vague still. But the antidote to unbridled capitalism is already here. Surely, it has become a bit too easy for its own good, too. And we must do everything in our power to make it more resilient, even at our own peril.
