WITH A SMILE OF SORTS (October 24, 2007)

“Dalmatia is beautiful,” said Shane Braddock with a smile of sorts, “but Dalmatians are Dalmatians.” From the vicinity of Split on his maternal grandmother’s side, he was born in Australia. Some years back he moved to Split together with his wife in the hope of helping with Dalmatia’s development. Now they have two little boys. Last year they bought a house in Motovun, too, hoping to connect Istria and Dalmatia. “Istria is beautiful,” I responded with a smile of sorts, “but Istrians are Istrians.” We both nodded a few times and looked at our feet sheepishly. Enough said, we both felt. More than enough, too.
