TIME FOR JOTA (December 11, 2007)

I have been daydreaming about growing food in my garden for the last few years. Potatoes, cabbage, and beans have been uppermost on my mind. They all store well for at least a season. Not only are they the main ingredients of jota, a traditional hearty soup in Istria, but I also remember reading a long time ago that this particular mix is perfectly sufficient for a healthy diet. In fact, nothing else is needed. One way or another, this venture into gardening has remained but a pipedream, though. Food is too cheap, anyhow. But the last issue of The Economist, which arrived in this morning’s mail, shook me out my slumber. “The End of Cheap Food,” blares the main leader. As well as the front cover. Instead of feeling worried, or at least perplexed, I swiftly turned the dreadful message around: “Time for jota, at last!” As it appears once again, I do eventually get it, but I surely need a few good kicks in the pants.
