THE SIEGE (October 29, 2007)

This season’s stinkbug siege has started a few days ago. By now, they are everywhere. In the morning, hundreds of them can be found huddling between the shutters and their frames. By the evening, they can be found crawling all around the house in search of crevices where they can hide unmolested. As well as lay their eggs, it would appear. As it is difficult not to annoy them, for they are often hidden from view, it is their stench that gives their hiding posts away: between books, under saucers, inside shoes… Some of them end up being thrown out the house, some crushed under foot, and some drowned in the toilet. But the siege continues unabated. It will take another week or maybe two at most, but the prospect is still harrowing. As far as simple evolutionary tricks are concerned, the one that has given stinkbugs their name is surely among the winners.
