THE ONLY PEOPLE ON EARTH (November 17, 2007)
My beloved comes to Motovun every fortnight. For the six coldest months of the year, on each visit I regale her with a big fire in the livingroom fireplace two evenings in a row on the average. As far as I can reckon, each fire takes the whole trunk of a twenty-year old tree, as well as a few of its branches for kindling. That adds up to six times two times two trees a year. That is, twenty-four trees just for fun that lasts about three hours on the average. Sustainable? Of course it is, assuming my beloved and I are the only people on earth. Which is precisely how we feel when she comes to Motovun.
