T-627, T-638 (November 14, 2007)

The North Face has been my favorite brand of climbing wear for at least a decade. A fortnight ago I got two pairs of pants made by this American company. They came from Manchester in England, though. Quite by chance, I looked for something in one of my pockets and discovered in it a tiny piece of paper with a code printed on it: T-627. Quality control, I realized at once. Without thinking, I pulled my pants down and looked at the label sewn on the inside of one of the seams to see where they were actually coming from. To my surprise, they were made in Bangladesh. I immediately looked for the second pair in my closet and looked through the same pocket. As I expected, I found another tiny piece of paper with a different code on it: T-638. Two women, I would bet. Judging by the codes, they are likely to know each other. Perhaps they come from the same village or town, too. And then I went through all the labels on both pairs of pants to see if I could find an address in Bangladesh where I could write a few words of thanks to these women. Sadly, I could not find it. Thus this note.
