ONE OF THEM (July 10, 2007)
It is only Tuesday, but Motovun is crammed with tourists as though it is already Saturday or Sunday. So far, such numbers could be seen only on the last few weekends. Put differently, the holiday season has started in earnest. Our town is yet to get really crowded, not to mention the heaving film festival at the end of this month, but there is already a palpable difference in tourist behavior by comparison with the last few months: there are so many of them that Motovun is kind of theirs, and they are not to be pushed around any longer. This is their town now. But the first sign of this shift was impossible to miss this morning: the tourists had stopped responding to my friendly greetings. Now they look through me as though I am one of them. As though I, too, am just a tourist.
