NINTH, SIXTH (July 22, 2007)
The ninth film festival in Motovun, which will run for five days starting tomorrow, will be my sixth. Sixth! I cannot believe my own calculations, but my first was in 2002, when I was buying my house. I knew nothing of the festival back then. Having started in 1999, it was already quite famous in Croatia, but it was yet to gain the international standing it enjoys today—at least in Central and Eastern Europe. Anyhow, the number attached to the festival surprises me year after year, for it offers a quick reminder of how long I have been living on top of this Istrian hill. I am hardly a newcomer any longer, but it appears it will take a few more years for that fact to penetrate through my thick skull. The march of film festivals will most likely help.
