MY QUAINT PROCLIVITIES (October 4, 2007)

I bumped into Vjeran Piršić several days ago. I had no idea he was in Zagreb, also. He lives on the island of Krk, where he leads a group of activists concerned with the environment. By and by, his organization has spread its wings over most of Dalmatia and Istria. The last few years we have been meeting often in the context of the ever-fiercer fight for the Adriatic coast, which has been suffering from excessive and misguided development. The plague is now moving inland, where developers and builders still have much to do. This is how Motovun has come under threat, of course. Vjeran is perhaps the best known “green” in Croatia. Wherever he goes, he connects people and engages them in common projects. Thus he has drawn me into a circle of leading activists in Zagreb. We spend a few hours every day talking about what to do next. Now, each and every time I promise to do something for the common cause, I explain that I am loath of leaving the Motovun hill. The fact that I am in Zagreb at the moment is a minor miracle, too. Vjeran just nods with a knowing grin. I add that I am prepared to leave my rock only a couple of times a year. In that context, I offer to help organize things in Motovun rather than anywhere else. To my surprise, few people have any problem with my quaint proclivities. Instead, they appear to be appreciating them.
