MY PROMISE (October 15, 2007)

I am often on the verge of promising myself never to write in Croatian again. That is, never again to engage in things “political” in Croatia. But I always pull back from the edge. Today I felt the urge one more time, and I went as far as to write into my notebook about it: “Can I make my promise today?” And then I got even more serious: “Can I make it right now?” Once again, I pulled back from the edge, though. I even pleaded for a few more days, as though any number of days would make any difference. But things are different at the moment. Less than an hour later, I am prepared to solemnly promise never to write in Croatian again. Those few Croatians who enjoy reading my writings are proficient enough in English, anyhow. My promise may help some of them become even more proficient, too.
