MOTOVUN – ECO TOWN, AGAIN (November 20, 2007)
When I accepted earlier this year the leadership of Motovun – Eco Town, a fledgling association concerned with sustainable development of the town and its countryside, it had only a handful of members. Within a month, there were some twenty members, but it was clear the association was heavily constrained by the Croatian law regulating associations. As well as the Croatian language. And so I recently decided to abandon the cumbersome straitjacket. Most important, I decided to put some money into yet another website, this time in English only. It is up and running as of yesterday (www.motovun-eco-town.org). Its main objective is to attract as many international members as possible, and to ask them from time to time to put pressure on all the politicians involved by writing letters defending Motovun from pernicious development. The site’s designer promised to keep it close to the top of search results on the World Wide Web, so that anyone interested in Motovun for any reason whatsoever would stumble upon it. Earlier today I sent the first such letter to the president of Croatia, the prime minister, two ministers concerned with building and culture, the governor of Istria, and the mayor of Motovun. In this case I only wished to alert them to the new site. Peekaboo!
