INFORMATION WANTS TO BE FREE (December 1, 2007)

Thus the vaunted slogan of World Wide Web devotees since its inception. I have always felt that this makes a lot of sense, but I am truly convinced only now. Why this stupendous gap? Because I have felt the real power of the new technology only after I got a broadband connection. Until yesterday, I was constrained by a clunky dial-up connection, which made me think twice or thrice before searching for something on the Internet. To begin with, it took quite a bit of time to get anywhere. In addition, there was a price attached to every single minute of search. As of yesterday, things are rather different. Whatever I search for, I always pay but a flat monthly fee. And the connection is almost instantaneous. For the first time in years I roam the ether with complete abandon. And I feel free. Perhaps ludicrously, I feel powerful, too. No wonder the old slogan has stayed with me for all these years.
