IN PLAIN TURKISH (August 12, 2007)
Two Turkish couples sat at the neighboring table on the hotel terrace. It took a superhuman effort on my part not to suggest to them that white wine was better than red. Or that black truffles were in season, whereas white ones came out of the icebox. But when I got up to leave, I could not stop myself from wishing them a good day and a good meal. And in plain Turkish, it goes without saying. Just like all the other comments I had had in mind. Their surprise brought me almost to tears.
