In the blackest of my moods, I am surprised by the idea that humanity is bound to retrace its steps. Step by step. Yes, serfdom will return in earnest. And so will slavery, in its own turn. Step by step, the species will revisit all the horrors of its supposed ascent. But then I remember that it has all started with hunting and gathering, the very first step. Hey, there is future for humanity, after all! And a glorious one, too. For our species has never had it better than at the very beginning. Long before history.
