GERMAN, FRENCH (October 26, 2007)

I have two recordings of Bach’s three celebrated violin concertos. One is German, the other French. Both are rather recent. And both are excellent. The music is identical, it goes without saying, but the interpretations are quite different. The German version sticks to Bach, and the two violinists are always in the background. The French is given to the two soloists, who are always in the forefront. Guess which of the two recordings I prefer? Well, neither. I love them both. On some days I go for the German version, and on others for the French. Today is different, though. I am listening to both versions with equal relish. One after another, time after time. It is a dark and rainy day, I should add.
