FOUR HOT PEPPERS (September 4, 2007)
When you walk up or down Borgo, you will often see plastic bags hanging off doorknobs. The bags contain all kinds of things: jars of homemade jam or tomato purée, empty but carefully washed dishes, a few cans of beer, a garden tool, a pair of pants or a skirt, a bunch of tomatoes… Either the person who was to receive these things was not at home, or the person who had brought them did not want to bother anyone in the house at an awkward time. There are no notes attached to these bags, as their contents are always perfectly clear to all concerned. But to no others. It goes without saying that the bags are perfectly safe out in the street. They are as good as sealed and chained to the front doors. Anyhow, today I found a plastic bag hanging off my doorknob. In it I discovered four hot peppers. Sooner or later I will learn who had left them there, but he or she must know me rather well. I immediately sliced the peppers and mixed them into my hot sauce. My fingertips are still burning with my unexpected quarry. The bliss!
