A NEW MAN (November 15, 2007)
Another construction site opened this morning at Borgo 25, right across the street from my house. Just like Borgo 27 further down the street, the house that used to be there is completely gone. Not even ruins have remained. The house at Borgo 23 is almost refurbished, but the one at Borgo 21 is still not far from a ruin. Although refurbishment had started a couple of years ago, it soon stopped for lack of money. Both of these houses are facing mine. The houses at Borgo 15 and 17, which are further up the street, are in dire shape. The former threatens to collapse any day now, while the latter is in a slightly better shape. And the house at Borgo 16, which is right next to mine on my side of the street, is completely gone. The owner promises to start building in a year or two. All in all, there will be construction sites galore around me. If the present trends continue, this section of Borgo will be in the best of shapes in about five years. This is good, it goes without saying. But it also takes patience. It takes resilience. And it takes a huge heart. I, too, will surely be a new man in five year’s time.
