“WITHOUT THE RICH, THE POOR WOULDN’T BE THERE, EITHER” (November 26, 2007)
Thus Miro Kopčalić, who came to Motovun for yesterday’s parliamentary elections in Croatia. Although he has been living in Tar near Poreč almost two years now, he is still registered as a resident of our town. What he meant to say was that the poor would have a hell of a time without the rich, whose wise stewardship was essential to their survival in this harsh world, but what he actually said sounded like something as obvious as not to warrant mentioning. No rich, no poor. Period. In spite of himself, he sounded like an ardent communist of old. Which is why I have teased him ever since, as everyone in Motovun knows that Miro is among the richest in town. As well as nowhere close to a communist. God forbid. The only bit that is missing in this story is why Motovun’s poor would not be able to make it without Miro’s wise stewardship. Or anyone else’s of his ilk. A mystery, if there has ever been one.
