THIS TRAVESTY OF A POLL (November 23, 2005)

A leading Croatian newspaper recently asked a score of leading people in Croatia, presumably intellectuals all, to nominate the leading Croatian intellectual. The newspaper printed the results of the poll yesterday. The lucky winner turned out to be a photogenic and talkative scientist with a knack for explaining things scientific to the general public. The newspaper printed his comments today. He said he was quite surprised by the poll because he knew that there were quite a few Croatians brighter than him. To wit, he is not an intellectual. Far from it. Neither are those who selected him, it goes without saying. The only remaining question is whether there are any intellectuals in Croatia at all. For they will have to react to this travesty of a poll. By tomorrow, or day after tomorrow at the latest, and in the same leading newspaper, too.
