SO TINY (January 12, 2005)
Several times today I saw a tiny insect fly up from a loaf of bread whenever I would touch it on the kitchen counter, and each time I decided without thinking to do absolutely nothing about it. The insect, that is. It was so tiny I could not even guess what it was. A fly? A moth? A wasp? In fact, it was so tiny I could not imagine it could do any harm to the bread. That is, me. And all this at an age when it is known beyond any shadow of the doubt that some of the most dangerous creatures on earth, such as bacteria and viruses, cannot even be seen with the naked eye. Having thought about all this at last, feeling like a dim-witted giant, I just lumbered back to the kitchen counter and touched the bread once again. This time the tiny insect did not fly up from the loaf. It must have had its fill.
