RISING DEMAND (January 12, 2005)
Teran in bulk was selling for ten Croatian kunas per liter in 2002, when I first came to Motovun. The price remained the same in 2003, as well. But in 2004 it rose to twelve kunas per liter. And this year the wine is selling for as much as fifteen kunas per liter. By the way, inflation is very low in Croatia, just as it is across most of Europe. In other words, here we are most likely dealing with shifts in supply and demand. Last year the price hike was justified by shrinking supply, as the summer of 2003 was quite dry. This year the supply expanded markedly, though. By any reckoning, the summer of 2004 was on the wet side. Therefore, the last price hike probably has to do with rising demand. It just crossed my mind that the steadily rising price of Teran in Motovun may have to do with my recent arrival in town.
