PERSON-KILOMETER (January 9, 2005)

The last few years in Reading there were many parties at my place. The larger the party, the more I liked it. This was the key criterion of success, at least by my reckoning. But there was another criterion that I always kept in mind: the distance my friends traveled to come to the party. The greater the distance, the happier I was. I would always make a big deal of everyone who came from afar, and especially from overseas, as the British would put it, but I also boasted of all those who traveled to Reading from London, Oxford, or Manchester. It is the same with my Motovun parties, but I now brag about those who come from Trieste, Rijeka, or Ljubljana. Both criteria of success are purely quantitative, as is only appropriate. In addition, they add up, as it were. That is, the success of each party could be expressed in terms of the same metric: person-kilometer. My only regret is that I have never actually measured it.
