NOTHING MORE DISTRESSING (December 23, 2005)

Dogs often sound very like babies when they cry. And distressingly so at times. Occasionally it takes a few seconds before it becomes clear it is a dog crying rather than a baby. It may well be that the sound has been adapted to the human ear, and not the ear of other dogs. For it is humans that dogs are crying for most often. It is humans they depend on for most of the essentials. And there is nothing more distressing to the human ear than the sound of a baby crying. Having lived with humans for millennia, dogs have had ample time to learn how best to attract their attention. Or how most effectively to express their distress. Anyhow, the sound of truffle dogs crying can often be heard in Motovun. There are many of them cooped up in crammed kennels around town. But, unbeknownst to the dogs, their probable adaptation is pretty much useless now, for there are so few babies in Motovun.
