AN AMERICAN INTELLECTUAL: A LETTER TO THE ECONOMIST (January 11, 2005)

The words you chose in your obituary for Susan Sontag (January 8, 2005), “an American intellectual,” at first struck me as jarring. Or inappropriate. A moment later I realized the expression was an oxymoron. And then it dawned on me that your choice of words was entirely fitting. In fact, perfect. Congratulations!
