After so many months in Motovun, it is hardly surprising that the town’s most ancient myth is about a mighty giant. Perhaps the tale of Veli Jože or Great Joseph has clung to this jutting hill for centuries or maybe even millennia before Vladimir Nazor (1876-1949) immortalized it in the eponymous novel first published in 1907. Looking down from the town, the surrounding world looks so puny, so slight that one cannot but perceive it as a toy world. A world of dwarfs. Veli Jože lives in our very minds. The minds of giants.
