THE UNITED STATES VERSUS EUROPE (February 11, 2003)
The least trouble the United States now faces are the Muslims or Arabs. It is the Europeans who are the real trouble. The European nations opposed to the war in Iraq are called by the American press “a chorus of cowards,” “an unholy alliance of wimps,” “the axis of weasels,” and such like. France is a nation of “cheese-eating surrender monkeys,” and its national bird is ostrich. An add showing a Mercedes, a BMW, and a Volkswagen asks: “Do you really want to buy a German car?” Belgium is called a “mini-me minion” nation. And all this comes not only from the tabloids, like The New York Post, but also from the major newspapers, like The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post. In short, we are up shit creek. We Europeans, that is. Muslims and Arabs have a fair chance, though.
