THE SPINES (November 26, 2003)

On occasion, when I search my bookshelves for something or other, I am startled to spot a copy of my Building as an Economic Process in its hardcover edition by Prentice-Hall (1989). But when I pull the book out in anger—as I promised myself not to take a single professional book to Istria, including those I wrote myself—I am quickly reassured. It is Flaubert’s Madam Bovary in a handsome edition by Everyman’s Library (1993). The spines of the two books are quite similar. For some reason, I always feel gratified by this discovery.
