TERRACOTTA (November 10, 2003)
The terracotta of my study and bedroom delights me ever more. The colder and darker it gets, the happier I am about the choice of color for my most intimate spaces. I just remembered how I selected it. Sometime last March or April I gave Marcello Hubička, a friend from Mošćenička Draga who had performed or overseen much of the work on my house, a roof-tile shard I picked up from the ground, and I told him to get the closest match he could find. A stickler for detail, this is exactly what he did. The match was close to perfect, I remember distinctly, although I picked the shard almost in jest. It just crossed my mind that terracotta is one of the oldest colors—that is, color ranges—known to our species. Always a good way to go about our choices, this.
