STARTING, FINISHING (May 15, 2003)
When I am starting a new notebook, I am eager to put my crooked marks in it, to soil its spotless pages with my clever thoughts. And when I am finishing an old notebook, I am eager to fill it up, to stuff it full, to get to the last blank page come what may. Eager, ever so eager. As though life is measured in notebooks. Or clever thoughts, for that matter.
