STARS AND STRIPES (June 1, 2003)

As I am eating my lunch, rice with my insuperable hot sauce, I occasionally cast a glance at the cover of The Economist that has arrived this morning. I make a point of never reading and eating at the same time. The cover shows George Bush Junior looking brightly (kidding!) over yonder. Together with the inane headline, “Now, the waging of peace,” the whole thing reminds me of the worst propaganda of my youth. Tito would have loved to be in that picture. And then I spot some crap at the bottom of the cover. Assuming it is a bit of my lunch, two grains of rice stuck together with sauce, I try to remove it. It would not budge, though. When I look a bit more closely, I realize I am looking at the Stars and Stripes pin he is wearing on his lapel.
