SO MUCH TRUER (May 6, 2003)

Last February, when I completed the manuscript for the latest selection from my Residua, cockily entitled Cave Art Now, I sent it via electronic mail to all those who had commented on the previous version of the text. Among about ten others, it went to Ivan Pešić, an old friend from Belgrade who now lives in Los Angeles. He is dealing with design in all its guises. We got in touch only recently through a mutual friend who occasionally shuttles between London and Los Angeles. A few days ago, when she returned from her last trip, she called to tell me she had a book for me from Ivan. I was surprised. When I asked her to tell me a bit more about the gift, it turned out it was his mock-up of Cave Art Now. As he explained by electronic mail a day later, he designed the book, printed it out, and had it bound so as to better enjoy reading it once again. This weekend my friend came to see me in Reading and brought the book. It is exquisite. Whenever I flip through it and read a few random passages, I delight anew in Ivan’s mastery of book design. My ravings about cave art and its place in contemporary art ring so much truer in his rendering than in mine. If only I could send it to all my friends interested in this esoteric subject!
