SLOVENIA VERSUS CROATIA (November 15, 2003)
One of the most important events today, at least in these parts, is the soccer match between Slovenia and Croatia. As far as I understand, the first game will be played in Zagreb sometime this afternoon or evening, and the second in Ljubljana in four days’ time. I am not sure whether this is a part of a cup, or only a qualifying game for a cup. All I know is that the game is important. When I ask the local boys about the whole thing, they shrug their shoulders. “Nothing special will happen in Zagreb,” they say modestly. “But,” they continue with a knowing smile, “the game in Ljubljana will be something else.” If I understand them correctly, the supporters of the Slovene team will behave rather well in Zagreb, and vice versa. This seems to be a matter of national pride. God’s gift, soccer.
