ON TORTURE IN AMERICA (January 11, 2003)
The news that al-Qaeda suspects are being subjected to torture in America, as well as that some suspects are being sent to countries known to use torture, have met with a muted reaction in America itself. Although there is some protest, it appears that most of the American public would rather not know. Just remember Nazi Germany. Most Germans would rather not know, either. And there were pockets of protest there, as well. Forget al-Qaeda. Ever since the opening of the Guantanamo Bay concentration camp this time last year, Americans are their own worst enemies.
