ON SIZE, AGAIN (June 25, 2003)
From a northbound train approaching Newcastle, Antony Gormley’s “Angel of the North” looks puny. “Do people like it?” I ask a woman from Newcastle sitting next to me. “Well,” she shakes her head sideways as she gets up to collect her stuff, “the opinion is very much divided.” Were it as big as it appears in promotional photographs, the opinion would be even more divided. Size divides.
