LATEX (December 7, 2003)

Flipping through a pile of Croatian newspapers by my restaurant table, I am attracted by a large title. “Condoms Cannot Stop AIDS,” it trumpets. The article is about a recent interview with a cardinal from Latin America for the Vatican radio. According to the cardinal, the problem is with latex. Every now and then, even a spermatozoid gets through, as witnessed by so many unwanted pregnancies. As the AIDS virus is four-hundred and fifty times smaller than a spermatozoid, condoms are that much more likely to be in vain. This syllogism is put forward in all seriousness. And so it is reported. Theologians of the Middle Ages eat your hearts out.
