JUST LIKE SHAKESPEARE (January 22, 2003)
It is dark outside. And quiet. Except for a boy and a girl, that is. In their late teens, they are screaming and shouting at each other in the Reading Abbey ruins next door. Thinking they are alone in the world, they are going at full volume. Although the windows are shut, I can hear them quite well. The funny thing is that they sound just like Shakespeare, whose plays are mounted in the ruins each summer. Abundant expletives notwithstanding, there is continuity to English language, especially at high volume. No wonder Shakespeare remains so popular in this land.
