IN PRAISE OF PARTNERSHIP (October 9, 2003)
I have been lucky with partners at work. In Ljubljana, it was Jože Dekleva. Together we led several major projects at the Urban Planning Institute of Slovenia. In Cambridge, Massachusetts, it was Eric Dluhosch and Mike Joroff. Eric and I dealt with building technology projects, and Mike was my partner in corporate real estate ventures. My years at MIT are unimaginable without them. In Reading, it was Will Hughes. Together we edited a leading academic journal, but we also collaborated on many other academic projects. Again, the University of Reading would be a very different place without Will. Over the years I was also lucky with research partners from other institutions, with whom I have written many papers. Roberto Pietroforte comes to mind first. Ever since our days at MIT, where he was a student of mine, we have done a lot of research together and published a load of papers. All these partnerships had lasted many a year and ended in lasting friendships. If there is a touch of pride in my words, so be it. Pride it probably is. But why this eulogy to partnership? And why now? Because it came to me as a surprise only a short while ago, as I was writing to a dear friend about the end of my working life. An egomaniac to boot, I have worked well with so many good people. God only knows how they managed to work with me, though.
