GRAIN BY GRAIN, STONE BY STONE (May 22, 2003)

A proverb I have known since childhood surfaced out of the blue: “Grain by grain, a loaf of bread; stone by stone, a palace.” The whole thing rhymes in Serbo-Croatian, of course. In the wake of recollection, a thought shaped in my mind: “Is this about my Residua?!” Of course not! This proverb among proverbs is about bread and palaces, whereas my book is about hell and paradise.
